Description
Light:
The Urn Plant prefers bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light but develops its best colour and blooms more reliably in a bright space. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight that may burn the leaves.
Watering:
Aechmea fasciata is a tank bromeliad, meaning it stores water in the “urn” or central rosette.
-
Keep the centre cup filled with clean water at all times.
-
Flush the cup every 1–2 weeks to prevent bacteria buildup.
-
Water the soil just lightly — it should be moist but never waterlogged.
In cooler months, reduce watering slightly but do not let the cup dry out.
Humidity & Temperature:
Urn Plants enjoy warm temperatures (18–28°C) and moderate to high humidity.
If the air is dry, mist weekly or place nearby other plants to create a micro-humidity zone.
Soil:
Use a free-draining mix, such as orchid mix, bark-based mix, or bromeliad substrate. Heavy soils will hold too much moisture and can cause root rot.
Flowering:
This plant is famous for its long-lasting pink flower head surrounded by silver-green leaves.
The bloom can last 2–5 months.
After flowering, the mother plant will eventually decline — this is natural — and it will produce pups at the base. These can be removed and repotted once they reach one-third the size of the parent.
Feeding:
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, as bromeliads are sensitive to strong feeds.
