Description

Light:
The Flaming Sword bromeliad thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light but will produce its best colour and strongest flower spike in brighter conditions. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun which can scorch the leaves.

Watering:
This plant is a tank bromeliad, meaning it holds water in the central cup (the “vase”).

  • Keep the central cup filled with clean, fresh water.

  • Flush the cup every 1–2 weeks to prevent stagnation.

  • Water the soil lightly — it should stay slightly moist but never soggy.

In winter, reduce watering but do not allow the cup to dry out completely.

Humidity & Temperature:
Prefers warm temperatures (18–28°C) and higher humidity.
If your home is dry, mist the plant occasionally or place it near other plants to raise humidity.

Soil:
Use a well-draining, airy mix such as orchid mix, bark mix, or bromeliad substrate. These plants do not like compact or heavy soil.

Flowering:
The Flaming Sword is known for its tall, bright red “sword-like” flower spike.
The flower lasts 2–4 months, after which the plant will slowly decline — this is normal.
New pups (baby plants) will grow around the base, and these can be removed and repotted once they are one-third the size of the mother plant.

Fertilising:
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted bromeliad or general houseplant fertiliser.
Avoid strong fertilisers — these can damage the plant.
