Description
Begonia ‘Silver Dollar’ is a truly captivating indoor plant, known for its striking, silvery-green, rounded leaves that shimmer in the light like polished coins—hence the nickname “Silver Dollar.” The foliage is thick and slightly textured, with delicate, scalloped edges that give the plant a soft, elegant feel. Its compact, bushy growth habit makes it perfect for tabletops, shelves, or as a standout in a mixed indoor plant display. While its leaves are the main attraction, the plant occasionally produces small, subtle blooms that add an extra touch of charm.
This begonia thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps the silver tones of the leaves really pop. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage and dull its beautiful sheen. If light is too low, the plant will grow more slowly, and the leaves may lose some of their distinctive colour.
Watering is straightforward but important: Begonia Silver Dollar likes its soil to be evenly moist but not waterlogged. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause the leaves to droop or curl.
Humidity is appreciated, as with most begonias. The plant enjoys moderate to high humidity, making it perfect for bathrooms, kitchens, or near a humidifier in drier indoor environments. Normal indoor temperatures are fine, but it should be protected from cold drafts or sudden temperature drops.
A well-draining potting mix, such as one for African violets or general houseplants with added perlite, works best. Fertilising lightly during the growing season helps maintain healthy growth and vibrant leaves.
Begonia ‘Silver Dollar’ is a plant that balances elegance and charm with easy care, rewarding attention with its shimmering, sculptural foliage. Compact, striking, and versatile, it is perfect for indoor plant enthusiasts who want a dramatic yet manageable addition to their home.
