Description
Begonia rex, often called the King Begonia, is a showstopper among indoor plants. Renowned for its dramatic, colourful foliage, Rex begonias display a stunning palette of patterns and shades, including silvers, purples, greens, reds, and deep burgundy, often combined in intricate swirls or splashes. The leaves are large, asymmetrical, and textured, sometimes with metallic sheen, giving the plant a sculptural, almost artistic presence. While its blooms are small and understated, it’s the foliage that steals the spotlight, making it a favourite for collectors and interior plant enthusiasts alike.
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light, which highlights the vibrant patterns and colours. Direct sunlight can scorch the delicate leaves, while too little light will dull their intensity and slow growth. A well-lit spot with filtered sunlight is ideal to maintain the plant’s vivid beauty.
Watering is key to keeping Rex begonias happy. They prefer evenly moist, well-draining soil. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot and leaf damage, while under-watering may lead to leaf curling or browning edges. Consistent moisture without waterlogging is the secret to keeping this plant healthy.
Rex begonias also appreciate high humidity and thrive in warm, indoor environments. They do well in bathrooms, kitchens, or near humidifiers, though they can tolerate average indoor humidity if cared for properly. Temperatures should be kept steady and protected from cold drafts.
A light, airy potting mix, such as one designed for African violets or indoor flowering plants with added perlite, is ideal. Light fertilising during the growing season will support vibrant foliage and steady growth, but overfeeding should be avoided.
Begonia rex is a plant that rewards attention and care with its stunning, artistic leaves. Perfect for indoor collections, tabletops, or as a statement piece, it adds drama, colour, and elegance to any space. Its intricate foliage patterns and textures make it more than just a plant—it’s living art.
